VMS Milking

A new generation of milking technology
Consider this fact: A farmer who milks 60 cows twice a day the traditional way, cleans an udder and attaches a cluster 43,800 times a year. That represents hundreds of hours spent labouring under your cows. Now that DeLaval has developed the VMS to do this repetitive job, couldn’t your time be better spent elsewhere?

VMS - Voluntary Milking System

New quality of life perspectives on the dairy farm

Robotic milking systems offer farmers like you a variety of advantages over traditional tied-up milking or parlour milking. They offer freedom from rigid milking schedules so you can enjoy greater flexibility in planning your days. You can look forward to fewer physical demands, less injuries and more time to manage your business for greater profit.

Improved animal welfare

One of your big concerns is looking out for the health of your herd. And your robotic milking system should do the same. The VMS minimises stress, guards against the spread of infection and limits the need for culling.

DeLaval has built in features that make milking as stress-free as possible. For example, when a cow enters the milking station she stands naturally on a flat, slip-resistant floor while the back of the stall automatically adjusts to her shape and size. And the box design makes the cow feel secure, by giving her an uninterrupted view of her surroundings and other cows during milking.

A profitable investment for you and your cows

Rarely does something’s value ever come down to cost alone and that’s no less true with a robotic milking system. While the price of some milking systems may appear attractive now, these systems may not offer you savings and value down the road. Long-term considerations include herd health, service, support, milk yield and quality.

Teat cleaning

Teat cleaning is important to milk quality and the cow’s health. With VMS, teats are cleaned individually with swirling jets of warm water and air. This helps ensure thorough cleaning. In addition, it provides excellent stimulation. Pre-milking is conducted in the most hygienic manner. Pre-milk goes down a separate line along with the wash water directly to the drain and never enters the VMS milk lines. When cleaning and pre-milking is completed, jets of air gently dry the teat.

Multi-purpose robotic arm

No other milking system duplicates the agility and precision of the human arm like VMS. Our multi-purpose robotic arm finds teats and attaches teat cups with amazing precision. That’s because sensors on the arm actually allow it to see what it is doing and adjust to each cow. It is so flexible; it can even handle teats at a 45-degree angle.

Quarter milking

With quarter monitoring, quality indicators such as flow, quantity and milking time for each quarter are monitored and reported individually. Systems that provide an average of all four quarters at once can conceal possible problems with individual teats or mammary glands. Quarter monitoring acts as an early warning system. It allows you to see any major shift in milking patterns, so you can take care of it before it becomes a serious problem.

Cow friendly solutions

Systems that require the cow to adapt to the machine’s requirements put undue stress on the cow and cows that can’t adapt, must be culled. The VMS incorporates features to help ensure the cow’s well being. For example when a cow enters the milking station, she stands naturally on a flat, slip-resistant rubber mat while the front of the stall automatically adjusts to her size. The box design makes the cow feel secure by giving her an uninterrupted view during milking.

Hygiene built in to every detail

Hygiene is important for milk quality and cow health. DeLaval has incorporated dozens of features to safeguard your milk and your herd. The splashguard, teat cleaning cup and flat floor design are just the start. There's the way the teat cups are washed inside and out after each cow. And notice how VMS teat cups are washed and stored up side down to prevent residue from falling in. Small details, but none-the-less important to your herd’s health.
